Deep cleanings aren’t only for people with less-than-stellar dental hygiene. Some folks simply have chronic periodontitis, a common gum disease caused by the buildup of large amounts of plaque. A periodontist specializes in preventing, diagnosing and treating gum disease.
We at the office of Monica Rao, DMD are here for you. We listen to your needs and collaborate with you to help your teeth stay healthy and in their best shape.
Without treatment, periodontitis can destroy the gum tissue and bone that support your teeth. The bacteria in the pockets dislodge teeth and, eventually, if too much bone is lost, the affected teeth may need to be extracted. Natural teeth have many advantages over dentures, partials and ill-fitting implants. Naturals fit better and feel more comfortable, whereas artificials can cause irritation and discomfort. “Real” teeth also help maintain the integrity of the jawbone because the roots of biological teeth stimulate bone growth and prevent bone loss, which can occur with dentures or implants.
A deep cleaning (also called scaling and root planing) thoroughly cleans the pockets and prevents damage to surrounding gum tissue and bone. A periodontist starts with the scaling, which means that he (or she) cleans the pockets to their bottoms. He then smooths out the roots so the gums can reattach to the teeth. You might need a second visit to complete the job.
Your gums will feel short-lived discomfort, and the periodontist will tell you how to care for your teeth during the following weeks, focusing on what to eat and how to brush. He might also prescribe a mouth rinse to tamp down oral bacteria. He’ll want to see you a few weeks later for a follow-up visit.
